TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup action lifts off on Friday
The 2024/25 edition of the CAF Interclub football season officially gets underway on Friday, 16 August with a number of quality match ups lined up across the continent.
Following what was yet another memorable TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup that saw Zamalek end their continental drought by lifting the title in front of their passionate fans in Cairo, the brand-new season of the competition officially gets underway this weekend.
A total of 51 clubs representing 40 member associations will be in contention for the title held by Zamalek this season, starting with the First Preliminary Stage which will be followed by the Second Preliminary Stage that will decide who qualifies for a place in the gruelling group stages of the competition.
The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup has for the past seven years been dominated by North African teams, with TP Mazembe of DR Congo being the last club from outside north Africa to lift the title when they did so in succession (2016, 2017).
Ghana (Hearts of Oak), Mali (Stade Malien) as well as AC Léopards (Congo Republic) are three other nations that have clubs that have lifted the title in previous years.
While some clubs, including holders Zamalek will be exempted from the first round, fans can still expect high-octane African football action from the likes of Zambia’s Zesco United, who take on Dynamos FC of Zimbabwe.
Nsingizini Hotspurs of Eswatini away to Stellenbosch FC of South Africa, while UTS FC of Morocco welcomes Cote d’Ivoire’s RS Abidjan.
In Algeria, CS Constantine takes on Police FC of Rwanda in just a few of the many exciting fixtures lined up this weekend.
