Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) will represent the CECAFA zone at 2024 edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
The Ethiopian giants finally achieved their aim of playing in Africa’s flagship women’s club competition after falling short in 2021 and 2023.
Playing against the tough Kenya Police Bullets team on Thursday, CBE’s key player Aregash Khalsa and her teammates defeated their opponents 1-0.
The Ethiopians found the breakthrough late in the game, thanks to Senaf Wakuma, who scored the decisive goal in the 79th minute.
This victory secures Ethiopian side’s spot in the CAF Women’s Champions League final stages for the first time in the club’s history.
CBE joins other regional champions: University of the Western Cape (COSAFA), Tout Puissant Mazembe (UNIFFAC), Aigles de la Médina (UFOA A), Edo Queens (UFOA B), and the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The host country for the fourth edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League will be announced later this year.
Honours:
- Top Scorer: Senaf Wakuma – 6 goals (Ethiopia - Commercial Bank of Ethiopia)
About Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) The women’s football team of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, commonly known as CBE, is based in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The club won its first Ethiopian championship titles in 2014 and 2015. After being overshadowed by Dedebit FC and Adama City for five years, the club signed Ethiopian star Loza Abera in 2020, leading them to reclaim the Ethiopian championship that same year. The team represented Ethiopia in the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League but lost in the CECAFA qualifying tournament final to Kenya’s Vihiga Queens. In 2023, CBE won the championship for the third consecutive time and represented their country again in the East African qualifiers but fell short in the final against Tanzania’s JKT Queens.
